Welp, that time of year has arrived. The time when I have to watch EVERY SINGLE DAMN STEP I take. I went out for a 2.5 to 3 hour easy jog this morning at Government Canyon – a large Natural Area in San Antonio where it’s easy to get long runs in. No more than 30 minutes in to the run, I was caught off-guard by a rattling/hissing noise.

It's a surreal scene, the finish line of an ultra at 3 a.m. Months of training, nearly a day spent arduously and painfully moving forward by any means possible. All for a couple claps, a small award, maybe a handshake from the race director. That's it. This is no place for egos or self-righteousness. And that's what makes it worth it. I tried taking some S-caps early, and pouring cold water over myself for a bit at the aid station. I tried taking on some salty food and started hiking more frequently, to lower my heart rate a bit.
